Business of the Month
Three Corners Connector
For decades, communities like Guymon have played an outsized role in keeping the lights on across
the country. Located at the crossroads of major energy resources and infrastructure, Guymon has
long been part of the backbone of America’s power system, quietly supporting reliable electricity for
homes, businesses, and industry in the Oklahoma Panhandle and beyond.
Today, that role is becoming even more important.
The national power grid is made up of three separate systems: the Eastern Interconnection, the
Western Interconnection, and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). These systems
operate largely independently, with limited ability to share power between them. As electricity
demand grows and extreme weather events place new strain on the grid, this lack of coordination
has become a challenge for reliability, affordability, and national energy security.
Communities like Guymon sit at the seams of these systems. That geography matters.
Three Corners Connector is a 300-mile, up to 525-kilovolt, high-voltage direct current transmission
line that will connect the Eastern and Western Interconnections, with planned endpoints in Guymon,
Oklahoma, and Pueblo, Colorado. By creating a new, controllable connection between the two grids,
Three Corners Connector will significantly strengthen the ability to move power where it is needed
most, when it is needed most.
Guymon’s role in this connection builds on its existing identity as an energy hub. The region already
supports substantial generation and transmission infrastructure, and has a workforce and community
familiar with energy development. Three Corners Connector positions Guymon as a gateway for grid
reliability in the Eastern Interconnection, helping ensure dependable power for communities across
the Plains and beyond for decades to come.
The project will also help unlock the full value of energy resources in the region. By improving
access between the Eastern and Western grids, Three Corners Connector will reduce congestion,
increase reliability, and provide customers with access to lower-cost energy. For Oklahoma power
producers, this means expanded access to new markets and a reliable outlet for excess generation
during periods of low demand, strengthening the region’s role as a supplier of energy to the broader
system.
Just as importantly, Three Corners Connector is being developed with a focus on long-term
partnership with local communities. Building strong relationships with landowners and residents is
central to the project’s approach. Easement negotiations are conducted with respect for private
property rights, transparency, and local priorities.
That commitment extends beyond the right-of-way. Three Corners Connector has supported
community organizations in Guymon, including the Pioneer Days Rodeo, Kids Inc, and Guymon
Public Schools. The project also established a Community Investment Program through the
Cherokee Strip Community Foundation to support innovative projects that enhance quality of life and
strengthen communities across Northwest Oklahoma.
Guymon has a long history of contributing to the nation’s energy system. Three Corners Connector
builds on that legacy, reinforcing the community’s role at a time when reliability, resilience, and
national energy security matter more than ever.
Three Corners Connector is grateful for the Guymon community’s engagement over the past four
years. For more information about the project, contact info@threecornersconnector.com, and a member of the team will follow up.
